News Channel 25 - KXXV TV Bioscience Accelerator will
bring jobs, industry to Temple by Natasha Chen
"TEMPLE - The Temple Bioscience Accelerator is meant to turn
ideas into products and will sit on 300 acres of land next to Scott and White's West Campus. Several entities signed a memorandum
of understanding on Monday, agreeing to work together to make the Accelerator a magnet for entrepreneurship.
The
goal is for start-up companies with ideas in medical fields, for example, to come to the Temple Bioscience Accelerator to
develop their projects into commercialized products.
"The particular goal for the community is to attract
the sort of high-end commerce to this community because of what it will do in terms of developing high-end jobs and just continuing
to improve the quality of life in our community," said Dr. Walter Dyck, senior advisor of the Temple Health and Bioscience
District..."
Scott & White Healthcare offers new fellowship
with multi-disciplinary approach to spine and pain medicine
Scott & White Healthcare has received approval from the
Texas Medical Board for a neurosurgical fellowship program in spine and pain. The fellowship is one of only a few in
the country that includes both spine and pain medicine.
"This comprehensive fellowship program will provide
a unique educational opportunity for physicians in the field of neurosurgery and underlines our commitment to a multi-disciplinary
approach, providing fellows with exposure to two fields beyond neurosurgery: orthopedics and pain management,"
said Vasilios Zerris, M.D., vice chairman of neurosurgery and program director for the fellowship program at Scott & White
Memorial Hospital. "We pride ourselves in our ability to see each patient simultaneously through the eyes of both a spine
surgeon and a surgical pain management specialist. And, whether a patient needs minimally invasive spine surgery or
an advanced form of pain treatment, we can provide both."
The Comprehensive Neurosurgical Fellowship Program
in Spine and Pain at Scott & White is designed to provide educational experience in spinal and pain pathology to a graduate
of a neurosurgery training program or senior neurosurgery resident. Few combined spine/pain programs exist despite the
fact that spinal pathology and pain are frequently interrelated. "Traditionally, spine surgery and pain surgery
are discrete entities,"said Dr. Zerris, whos also assistant professor of medicine at Texas A&M Health Science Center
College of Medicine. A fellowship is an advanced level of specialty training that goes beyond a residency.
The Scott & White fellowship will consist of one year of training divided into: - nine months at Scott & White
Memorial Hospital - 10 weeks at the VA Hospital in Temple, and, - two weeks at the Scott & White pain clinic
"Depending on their personal interest, these fellows will also be offered the opportunity for ongoing research
projects and will get experience in all aspects of spinal care, including that of degenerative conditions, trauma, deformity,
as well as infectious disorders," said Dr. Zerris. "Theyll also get experience in inpatient and outpatient care
of both elective and emergent treatments."
